Dr. Joseph Mercado, Vice President for Research, Extension, Planning and Development of the University, served as plenary speaker of the Asia Pacific Consortium for Researchers and Educators International Conference 2016 held at the Dusit Thani Hotel, Pattaya, Thailand on September 21, 2016.
The PUP official reminded the delegates from around the region about the important role of higher education institutions to remain “bastions of humanism, morality and intellectualism”. A university, according to the Vice President, must remain “autonomous and as free as the creative and innovative mind that it embodies”.
Dr. Mercado also pointed out the challenges that universities have to encounter and how to face these challenges squarely. According to him, universities must have to ‘stay afloat ‘and ‘gracefully glide through the waves’.
The Vice President concluded his speech with a quotation from David McKay which says: “True education does not consist merely in the acquiring of a few facts of science, history, literature, or art, but in the development of character”.
