In celebration of Andres Bonifacio’s 158th birth anniversary, the College of Social Sciences and Development (CSSD), in collaboration with Logia Katipunan No. 4 and Gran Logia Nacional de Filipinas (GNLF), organized a webinar titled “Andres Bonifacio: Katipunan and the Brotherhood of Freemasons” on November 30, 2021, live at PUP CSSD Facebook page.
The speaker of the webinar was Prof. Felix Ramos Jr., a member of Masons for 30 years. Prof. Ramos became Master Mason in 1991 and is currently the “Tinyente Soberano Grand Comendador”. Prof. Ramos discusses about the Katipunan and the Masonry which took several elements from Grand Orient Symbolic Masonry, such as the three-degree system for initiating new members, passwords, indications of identification, specific symbols, and officers’ jewelries.
“Ang pag gunita at pagdiriwang nating ng ika-isang daan at limang put walong kaarawan ni Supremo Andres Bonifacio ay maging simula ng ating kontemplasyon at pagsusuri ng mga tunay na batis na magbibigay sa atin ng tunay na liwanag sa salaysay ng naratibo ng ating bayan,” said Dr. Raul Roland Sebastian, Dean of CSSD.
Andres Bonifacio y de Castro was a Freemason as well as a revolutionary leader in the Philippines. He was born in Tondo, Manila on November 30, 1863, and died on May 10, 1897. In order to continue the revolt against the Spaniards, Bonifacio formed a secret society, which paved the way for the founding of the First Philippine Republic in 1898.
Andres Bonifacio went by the Masonic moniker Sinukuan. He was the Katipunan’s third (after Roman Basa), fourth, and final Supremo, and was the driving force behind the commencement of a revolution in Manila in 1896.
