More than 60 higher education institutions and organizations participated in the ASEAN Connect 2018 with the theme "Science and Technology Spanning Through Community Development" held on August 8 to 10, 2018 at the Novotel, Cubao, Quezon City, Philippines.
ASEAN Connect serves as an important venue for dynamic, democratic, and participative discussion to offer a clear pathway to achieving realizable, relevant, beneficial, and practical region-wide extension programs. It aimed to advance advocacies that promote Food Production and Security; Environment, Disaster Risk Reduction, Climate Change and Energy; Promotion of Science and Technology; and Education for STEAM. It also served as a venue towards building a network of extensionists whose primary objective is to contribute not only to national development but also to regional prosperity.
Department of Science and Technology - National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) Regional Director Hon. Jose B. Patalinjug III served as this year's keynote speaker. In his speech, Patalinjug reiterated the importance of extension programs in building a more developed community. "Institutions like PUP and other universities have the mandate to help and further develop their community through extension programs," said Patalinjug.
The event also showcased lectures from officials and academicians from ASEAN countries.
The highlight of the event was the symbolic signing of ASEAN- Extension Network which was participated by representatives from ASEAN higher education institutions and organizations.
The event ended by singing the ASEAN solidarity song "Heal the World" by Michael Jackson.
ASEAN Connect 2018 was hosted by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, in partnership with the Commission on Higher Education, and the Department of Science and Technology - National Capital Region, with the support from the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges, the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Researchers and Educators, and the Philippine Information Agency.
