With the help of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) begins its largest construction project so far: the improvement of the North Wing - Main Academic Building.
In a groundbreaking ceremony held on September 8, President Manuel M. Muhi states that this project is one of the highlights of a re-engineered university as he continues to bid for a National Polytechnic University status.
“Since my appointment as a president last 2020, infrastructure projects is my focus. I started lobbying for budget to address the long-standing issues about poor facilities in our university,” said President Muhi. He also mentioned other construction projects that are taking place alongside the construction of main building, such as the improvement of the lagoon, sports facilities, laboratories, classrooms, and research buildings.
“Years from now, I believe that our future students will be filled with gratitude for they have finally been provided with the sufficient learning facilities that they so richly deserve. We will continue to foster an atmosphere that allows our employees, students, and faculty members to thrive while providing a quality education for our PUPian in a safe, secure, and supportive environment,” he added.
The demolition of the north wing building will begin in the middle of October, according to President Muhi. The project, which will be executed in three phases, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024 or the beginning of 2025.
“The DPWH already assured and approved of the allotted budget for the phase 2 and even the phase 3. Kung tuloy-tuloy ang support nila, we can complete the project by 2024 or early quarter of 2025,” he said.
Pres. Muhi added that the design of the new main academic building not only takes into account the academic needs of the students, but all engineers and architects also ensured that it is disaster-resilient, especially given the environmental risks in the area, such as the Pasig River, which may cause frequent flooding.
With this consideration, there will be more open ground floors, which will serve as student centers. The main building will also have larger classroom sizes, elevators, and air-conditioned multi-purpose rooms.
As the university ramps up its effort to improve facilities, the university president urged all Iskolar ng bayan to take care of all the facilities and take full advantage of them once the classes start.
“Sa mga mahal naming estudyante para sa inyo ito. Lahat ng facilities natin ay ginawa para mayroon kayong magamit na maayos. Suklian natin ng pagmamahal at alagaan natin ang ating mga pasilidad,” he said.
