Mayor Isko Moreno received the very first Gawad Uliran at Respetadong Opisyal (GURO) last November 22, 2019 at PUP Sta. Mesa in celebration of the 10th Founding Anniversary of the College of Education. With the theme “COED TENacity: A Decade of Excellence in Teacher Education,” Mayor Isko Moreno was granted the first G.U.R.O for having shown exemplary leadership as mayor of Manila. Led by the University President, Dr. Emanuel C. De Guzman and the Dean of the College of Education, Dr. Ma. Junithesmer D. Rosales, the whole PUP community warmly welcomed the esteemed mayor, who despite the heavy rains, still continued to grace the event. In his speech, Mayor Isko emphasized the important role played by the teachers in nation-building and challenged the teachers to effectively use their platforms as second parents to develop among students the correct and positive mindset. “Malaki ang ginagampanan ng mga guro para hubugin ang mga Pilipino. Kayo ang huhulma sa mga darating na kasapi ng pamayanan. Kayo ang huhulma sa mga susunod na magiging tatay, nanay, manggagawa, at lider.” Mayor Isko implored for more patience and cooperation from the academic sector as he believes that teachers hold the key for the success of this country, “Sa inyo nakasalalay ang pagbuo ng tamang kaisipan ng bawat indibidwal. Malaki ang partisipasyon n’yo sa ikatatagumpay ng ating pamayanan o bansa.” He asked the help of the teachers to inculcate among the students the capacity to dream big for the country, in order to address the most pressing issues that our nation faces today such as inequality, injustice and low-quality services. With this, he demanded that every Filipino be a vigilant citizen, to ask what’s due of our leaders and the entire administration, “Ang pananahimik ay pagpayag. Mag- demand kayo ng maayos na serbisyo sa gobyerno.” Mayor Isko ended his speech with a message that solicits unity, peace and hope of change, “Ang tagumpay ng isang pamahalaan ay dahil sa kanyang mamayan.” The College of Education hopes to award more deserving public officials. This is to show that teachers can be a catalyst of change not just within the school but also within the community. ###
