Senator Alan Peter Cayetano sought the cooperation of the government as he galvanized support for the modernization of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) during his speech at the celebration of PUP Taguig’s 30th Founding Anniversary, last month.
The senator cited the university’s consistent performance in producing employers’ top preferred fresh graduates as one reason for its well-deserved development budgetary subsidy from the government.
“PUP deserves the all-out support of the House of Representatives, the Senate, and Malacañang to modernize not only because you are one of the premier universities, but because your graduates are the number one choice of employers,” Cayetano told the attendees.
Long-term reform for SUCs Cayetano expressed his desire for long-term reforms in the PUP system and in all SUCs in the Philippines. He said that is waiting for the 2023 Senate budget deliberation for SUCs, where he plans to allocate PUP and other SUCs with government funding to support their modernization programs.
“Marami pa ang magagawa [ninyo] kung dadagdagan natin [ang budget]. So I’m asking you and the SUC body na magtulungan tayo. Let’s work on some long-term reforms for all SUCs. Marami pa tayong pwedeng baguhin,” he urged the attendees.
Efforts for the future of SUCs Cayetano expressed hope that collaborative efforts between the government and SUC bodies will continue for years to come out of the strive for educational betterment.
“In three to six years, I hope that we can all look at each other as a body, as people who love the PUP system and say that we have contributed to make it a better university. Pagagandahin pa natin ang PUP,” he said.
